Doyers Street is named after a Dutch immigrant who opened a brewery here in 1791. The angle at the back of this alley was called bloody angle due to all the murders that took place here between Tong gangs when the Chinese migrated into the area. Not only was the angle a benefit to those on the attack, but the alleyway had/has many hatches that attackers would hide in....the origins of the term 'hatchet man'.....
Aha!
Here is the bloody angle today. This is Nom Wah Tea Parlor, first dim sum house in NYC opening in 1921 as a tea house. Not only was the food in the window interesting to look at, but across the street is a barber giving a man a full lather shave in a reclined position with a razor blade. 'They still do that?' asked one of the young men.
