The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted 35 days in 1945 as Allied forces fought the Japanese on the island of Iwo Jima. This Memorial commemorates that battle, one of the fiercest of WWII, fought by the Marines and also honors Marines who fought and died in all American conflicts since the Revolutionary War. Casualties in the Battle of Iwo Jima numbered 6,821 for Allied forces and 21,844 for the Japanese.
This memorial is modeled after the famous photo by Joe Rosethal raising the flag on Mount Suribachi.
